Sea birds facts

 Marine bird Puffin

Puffins are seabirds that are black and white with a stocky build and large beaks. The tufted and horned puffin can be found in the North Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic puffin can be found in the North Atlantic Ocean. Puffins have strong wings designed for diving in the water to catch their food. They are nicknamed clowns of the sea because of their colouring and are carnivores eating herring, haake and sea eels.

Birds Poster

Pictured are some of our native birds. Top left we have the pukeko, top right we have the Saddleback and bottom we have the kiwi.

We can keep our native birds safe by not disturbing their habitat, leaving nests alone, don't leave rubbish near their habitat, set traps if predators are in the area, keep your cats indoors at night, set up safe feeding stations away from predators, keep your dogs on a leash. Use designated pathways to avoid disturbing a bird's habitat, when fishing take fishing lines and debris away.

Respect to others

 Showing respect to others

What was the main message of the story?  It tells us that we have to love and help everybody even if we don't like them or they have less than us. It teaches us to accept everyone and do the right thing.

How did the Samitan show respect? The Samaritan showed respect by helping the man who was robbed and paid for a place to stay for hik when no one else did.

Information Report Possums

 Information Report Possums

Introduction Possums are Australian marsupials that were introduced in NZ in 1837 and are a pest to our native trees and shrubs and native land snails, lizards and insects and native bird eggs by chasing the mother birds out of their nests.

When did NZ recognise possums as pests? It wasn't until the 1940s, over a hundred years after they were introduced in NZ,  that scientific evidence proved that possums were predators and pests. Since then NZ have tried to control the possum.

How are possums controlled? There are toxic baits and traps that can control possums. There are licensed possum control contractors who use a combination of methods from aerially applied baits laced with toxins to cyanide baits and leg traps.

What organisations are there to help with possum control?

There are different agencies that can help with possums and the conservation of our land and native animals. There is TBfree NZ, regional councils, Department of Conservation, and Ministry for Primary Industries. Each has their own department concerning the risk possums pose to different things such as native plants and trees, native animals and biosecurity issues.

Conclusion Animals are a recognised pest and need to be removed from NZ. They pose huge risks to a lot of things and are a danger to our native animals and forestry. It would be better if we didn't have possums in the first place.

Marine Creatures Activity 2

Female crabs have wider tails because they carry their eggs under it.

Marine Creatures Activity 1

Animals found between the tides on the muddy shores of NZ are: mussels, barnacles, limpets, sea anemones, and predatory sea stars, each with a different ability to avoid predation or live outside of the water.

cirri which extend and retract at the top of the barnacle in order to eat microscopic organisms. They mainly eat plankton. A muscle opens so the cirri can sift for food.  Barnacles defend themselves by having  calcium carbonate shells and two plates that shut when not eating to ward off predators.

Limpets scrape the rocks with a strong toothy organ known as a radula. They eat other barnacles. The thick, conical shell and strong, muscular foot combine to ma

Sea anemones Sea anemones feed by their tentacles. They mainly eat fish and kill them by firing a harpoon-like filament called a nematocyst into their prey. Once injected with the paralyzing neurotoxin, the prey is guided into the mouth by the tentacles.

Sea anemone uses its tentacles to capture prey and defend itself against predators. Every tentacle is covered with thousands of tiny stinging capsules called nematocysts. ... The anemone moves all the nearby tentacles into position to sting and hold its prey until it is subdued by the poison.

Predatory sea stars feed by extending their stomach through their mouth and over the digestible parts of its prey, such as mussels and clams. The prey tissue is partially digested externally before the soup-like "chowder" produced is drawn back into its 10 digestive glands. Sea stars can defend themselves from predators by detaching an arm from its body. Mussels catch their food by filtering it through the water. They keep themselves safe from predators by their hard outer shells. Mussels eat algae and bacteria.

Barnacles catch their food by using their feather-like appendages known as ke a strong defence against predators. The shell is shaped to give this animal a low profile, protecting it from crashing waves and strong coastal currents.

Apure Moana Reserve Answers

The signals Ben taught us is one hand for assistance, two hands if you are in a life threatening situation, if you are okay close by you put your closed fist on your head and if you are far away you put your hands together above your head.

Thumbs up means go up, thumbs down means go down,

If you are okay you put your thumb and forefinger together to make a circle.

The marine animals I saw in the video were kelp.

Marine reserves are important because they keep marine life safe, conserve fish and food species and be able to be studied by humans.

I live near an easturty that has different kinds of animals like fish, shellfish and birds.
